Canadian Paystub Generator — Helpful Tips

What Taxes Are Deducted from a Canadian Paycheque?

Canadian employees have three main statutory deductions withheld from every paycheque:

  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP): 5.95% on pensionable earnings between the basic exemption ($3,500) and the YMPE ($73,200 in 2026). Employees over 65 who elected to stop contributing and employees under 18 are generally exempt.
  • Employment Insurance (EI): 1.66% on insurable earnings up to the maximum insurable amount ($67,400 in 2026). Quebec employees pay a reduced rate of 1.27% because they also contribute to QPIP.
  • Federal and Provincial Income Tax: Calculated using progressive tax brackets. The federal rate starts at 14% (effective 2026) and provincial rates vary from 4% (Nunavut bottom bracket) to 21% (Nova Scotia top bracket).

Our generator calculates all three deductions automatically based on the province you select.

2026 Federal Tax Brackets — What Changed?

The 2026 federal bottom rate dropped from 15% to 14%, effective July 1, 2025, as announced in the 2025 federal budget. This is the first change to the bottom federal bracket rate in decades and represents a modest tax cut for most Canadian workers.

The 2026 federal tax brackets are:

  • 14% on income up to $58,523
  • 20.5% on income from $58,523 to $117,045
  • 26% on income from $117,045 to $181,440
  • 29% on income from $181,440 to $258,482
  • 33% on income over $258,482

The federal basic personal amount (BPA) for 2026 is $16,129, applied as a non-refundable tax credit.

Quebec Paystubs: CPP vs QPP, and QPIP

Quebec employees have a different set of payroll deductions compared to other provinces:

  • QPP (Quebec Pension Plan) replaces CPP. The employee QPP rate is 6.40% — slightly higher than the 5.95% CPP rate. The same YMPE and basic exemption apply.
  • QPIP (Quebec Parental Insurance Plan) is an additional deduction of 0.494% on insurable earnings up to $97,000. It provides maternity, paternity, adoption, and parental leave benefits.
  • Reduced EI rate: Because Quebec employees pay QPIP, the EI rate for Quebec residents is 1.27% instead of the standard 1.66%.

When you select Quebec as the province in our generator, all three adjustments are applied automatically.

CPP2: The Second Additional CPP Contribution

Since 2024, employees earning above the YMPE also contribute to CPP Enhancement 2 (CPP2). In 2026:

  • CPP2 applies to earnings between $73,200 (YMPE) and $78,390 (YAMPE)
  • The CPP2 employee rate is 4%
  • Maximum CPP2 contribution: approximately $207/year

CPP2 is only applicable to higher earners. Most employees will not pay CPP2 on their regular bi-weekly paycheque unless their annualized income exceeds $73,200.

What Is a TD1 Form and Why Does It Matter?

The TD1 (Personal Tax Credits Return) is the Canadian equivalent of the US W-4 form. Employees complete a federal TD1 (and a provincial TD1) when they start a new job to declare which personal tax credits they are claiming.

The most common claim is the basic personal amount, which for 2026 is $16,129 federally. Employees who claim a higher amount (e.g., spouse or dependant credits) will have less tax withheld. Employees who claim zero (no credits) have maximum tax withheld.

Our generator uses the standard 2026 federal BPA of $16,129 by default. You can override this with the actual TD1 claim amount in the Advanced Employee Information section.

Pay Stub Requirements by Province

Most Canadian provinces require employers to provide written pay statements at each pay period. While exact requirements vary, most provinces require the following to be shown on a pay stub:

  • Employer name and address
  • Employee name and SIN (often last few digits only)
  • Pay period start and end dates, and pay date
  • Gross earnings for the period and year-to-date
  • All deductions itemized (CPP, EI, income tax, and voluntary deductions)
  • Net pay for the period

Our Canadian paystub generator includes all required fields and produces a compliant, professional paystub PDF.

Canadian Paystub Generator — Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculate CPP and EI correctly for 2026?

Yes. CPP is calculated at 5.95% on insurable earnings between $3,500 (basic exemption) and $73,200 (YMPE). EI is calculated at 1.66% on insurable earnings up to $67,400. Quebec residents automatically use the QPP rate (6.40%), reduced EI rate (1.27%), and QPIP (0.494%). CPP2 is also applied for higher earners on earnings between $73,200 and $78,390 at 4%.

Are all 13 Canadian provinces and territories supported?

Yes. Our generator supports all 13 jurisdictions with 2026 provincial/territorial income tax brackets: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Yukon.

What is the 2026 federal basic personal amount?

The 2026 federal basic personal amount (BPA) is $16,129. This is applied as a non-refundable tax credit at the new 14% bottom rate, reducing your federal income tax. Each province also has its own BPA ranging from approximately $8,481 (Nova Scotia) to $21,003 (Alberta).

What changed with federal taxes in 2026?

The bottom federal rate was reduced from 15% to 14%, effective July 1, 2025. This means the federal BPA credit and the lowest tax bracket are now calculated at 14% instead of 15%. For most workers, this results in a modest reduction in federal income tax — roughly $157 in annual savings for those claiming only the basic personal amount.

Can I generate Canadian paystubs for contractors?

Yes. Toggle between "Employee" and "Contractor" at the top of the form. For self-employed contractors, CPP contributions still apply (at a higher combined rate), but EI is generally optional. Our generator lets you exempt CPP and EI individually if needed.

Is the SIN (Social Insurance Number) required?

No. The SIN field is optional and only the last 3 digits appear on the paystub for identification purposes. You can leave it blank and add it later before downloading. We never share or store SIN data beyond what's needed to generate your document.

Are Canadian paystubs generated here legally valid?

Yes. Paystubs generated with accurate, truthful payroll information meet Canadian employer pay statement requirements across all provinces. The legal requirement is that the information is correct — not that it was produced by specific payroll software. Our paystubs include all provincially required fields.

Does the free paystub include a watermark?

Yes. Free Canadian paystubs include a "SAMPLE" watermark. To download a clean, watermark-free professional paystub, paid plans start at CA$2.95 per stub — no subscription required.
